Canary Islands vote shaken up by Moroccan oil find

Oil has been located in Moroccan waters just 200 kilometres from the shored of the Spanish Canary Islands. This report from drillers in the area, found in the Spanish daily El Mundo, could shake up the upcoming vote on oil exploration considerably.

The non-binding consultation will see whether or not people support the controversial plans from Spanish energy giant Repsol in the archipelago’s waters which have already been approved by government and are due to begin later this year.

The vote was called after the approval triggered outrage from environmental campaigners in the country. It will be held on November 23rd.

According to Genel-San Leon-Serica consortium, oil has been found off the coast of Sidi Ifn, a former Spanish colony in southern Morocco, at a depth of just under three thousand meters. Further tests are to be carried out by the English-Turkish consortium to see if the oil found is of commercial quality. Both Spain and Morocco have been searching for oil in the same Atlantic region for the past 15 years, but this find could be the most encouraging yet for either side.
